  Do you want to  watch videos online  with friends in real time? These are some applications that exist for this purpose. Little is known about the reasons why people watch videos online , their intentions, motivation, and preferences. The remainder of this paper is organized as follows. Section 2 reviews related work, particularly articles that focus on user surveys in this field as well as literature focusing on the analysis of YouTube log files and metadata. In Section 3 we describe the design of our two studies in detail, whereas Section 4 highlights their most important results. Section 5 discusses our findings and Section 6 presents the basic aspects of a prototype of a novel, adaptive, video search and retrieval interface that takes into account the results and insights from both studies. Finally, Section 7 presents our concluding remarks, highlighting the contributions of this work and suggesting opportunities for future work.
